April 2024

Tuesday 16th. Club Night.

“Run down river – Ship-wreck and loss from Bristol to Bridgewater.

Will see the return of Paul Barnett with a talk on shipping in our local area. Commercial and military shipping in the Bristol Channel and up the Severn river has a long history impacting on the local economy and national security. We have all benefitted from the success of this history, but success usually comes at a cost. Ships have been lost due to accident, and sometimes deliberately beached to consolidate and preserve the shoreline from erosion. Thanks to historians like Paul, the study of the past events can be a useful guide for the future of navigation. Paul will reveal the story behind significant shipping losses on the stretch of the coastline from Bristol down to Bridgewater.
